PhD position

Applied fungal microbiology in Graz, Austria for 30 hours a week

Citric acid is microbially produced in industry by Aspergillus niger. The molecular mechanisms of the citric acid production in Aspergillus niger are not fully elucidated and are seen as limiting factors. Transport processes play an essential role and understanding the regulation of those processes could help to improve the citric acid production. In this project, acib will work on genetic and metabolic engineering tools to enable a deeper understanding of the mechanisms behind the process.

2x PhD positions

Fungal Biotechnology in Vienna, Austria for 30 hours a week

Filamentous fungi like Aspergillus niger are industrially important microbial producers of proteins and organic acids. Recently, important insights were gained how citric acid can be efficiently secreted by the fungal cells. In a new project novel strain breeding and screening techniques shall be developed. Techniques from microbiology and genetics together with genomic approaches are used to obtain further insights into the biology of A. niger. Your task is to find, apply and test new strategies to further boost Aspergillus niger’s capabilities as an organic acid producer.

Post Doc position

Synthetic biology for efficient gas feedstock conversion
Graz / Austria, 40 hours a week

As part of the acib Lighthouse project “Synthetic biology for efficient gas feedstock conversion” the project will explore the potential of an autotrophic bacterium (Cupriavidus necator) for the production of biochemicals. The feasibility of autotrophic production host will be demonstrated, so that the breadth of the general approach can be estimated. The approach is to integrate synthetic biology and process intensification to demonstrate the successful production of commodities from CO2 and thus to bring acib into a leading position in the microbial utilization of carbon dioxide.
