Developing a glycosylation platform technology to an industrial level
CARBAFIN was a collaborative research project that began in January 2018 and ended in 2022. It was co-funded by the European Union with a total budget of € 5.3 million. The EU consortium comprised eight partners from five different countries.
CARBAFIN developed a sustainable, phosphorylase-based platform for the production of functional glucosides from sucrose. The project aimed to establish a new value chain for surplus sugar beet biomass in the EU by converting glucose and fructose separately into high-value products at industrial scale. Additionally, CARBAFIN explored new applications for glycosylated compounds in the food and feed, cosmetics, detergents, and polymer sectors, and investigated the use of fructose as a precursor for the platform chemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF).
