Overview
Continuous bioprocessing is a transformative approach in biomanufacturing, enabling higher efficiency, improved product consistency, lower footprint, and reduced production costs. However, the reliable operation of interconnected unit operations in continuous mode requires not only advanced automation strategies and robust fault-tolerant control concepts, but also biologically stable production systems and an integrated process design.
Within the interdisciplinary R&D project ECOnti, led by enGenes, the consortium set out to enable the first fully integrated, automated continuous microbial bioprocess. Building on enGenes’ patented technology for genetic stabilization of recombinant production strains, the project addressed one of the major roadblocks of continuous microbial manufacturing: long-term biological robustness under continuous operation.
The presented use case highlights how the tight integration of stable biology (enGenes) and model-based automation (QUBICON) enables robust and autonomous operation of complex continuous bioprocesses. Overall, the webinar showcases how microbial-based continuous bioprocessing can be developed and implemented end-to-end, from genetic design of the host
Topics
In this webinar, Jürgen Mairhofer (CEO of enGenes) will introduce the biological and process-related foundations of ECOnti and outline how stable continuous upstream operation enables downstream integration and automation.
QUBICON was responsible for bridging the physical bioprocess with digital twins of all relevant unit operations. Wolfgang Sommeregger (CEO of QUBICON) will demonstrate how model-based control strategies were implemented for two critical unit operations: tangential flow filtration (TFF) and multi-column chromatography (MCC). In addition, he will present the automation concept for an in-line HPLC system enabling continuous, real-time analysis of product concentration.
