Georg Gübitz obtained his master in biochemistry and food chemistry at Graz University of Technology in 1993. He spent one year in Nicaragua investigating biotechnical upgrading of byproducts from oil seed plant processing. He obtained his PhD at the Department of Biotechnology in 1996.
As a Erwin-Schroedinger Fellow, he investigated the potential of enzymatic processes for lignocellulose processing at University of British Columbia, Canada from 1996 – 98. Back at TUGraz, Gübitz participated in 20 European research projects related to polymer processing and coordinated 5 out of which. In parallel, he cooperated with industry in bilateral projects and reseach centres such as ACIB.
He is the coordinator of the intl. networks COST868 on Biotechnical Functionalization of Renewable Materials and on Polymer/Textile Biotechnology (IPTB). Addtionally, he is a member of editoral boards and guest editor for various biotechnology related journals. His current research interests are both mechanistic and applied investigations related to biotechnical functionalisation and processing of polymeric materials. In this area Gübitz has published more than 180 papers in peer reviewed journals, he holds 9 patents and has edited various books.
