Nicole Borth, graduated in Biotechnology from the University of Applied Life Sciences Vienna, Austria in 1991. After a short research stay at MIT in the group of Prof. Daniel Wang, she returned to the Department of Biotechnology at BOKU and is associate professor since 1999. Her research focuses on the establishment of analytical and sorting methods to characterise and to improve production cell lines with respect to high production rates and cellular performance, with a focus on animal cell factories, primarily CHO cells. Her group has developed methods to analyse the specific protein secretion rate of single cells, which can be used to sort for high producers. In combination with other parameters such as varying culture conditions or metabolic rates these methods can be used to screen for cells which are ideally suited to perform well under predefined culture conditions and process design. Recently, her group started working on integrating different –omics technologies to obtain a more comprehensive view of cell performance. To this end, she has started several projects on establishing the genomic and expressed DNA sequence of CHO cells.
In ACIB Nicole Borth is deputy head of the research field Cell Design and Cell Engineering
