Helmut Schwab studied biochemistry and biotechnology at Graz University of Technology where he received his PhD in 1980. After some years of industry experience (Vogelbush GmbH Vienna and Sandoz GmbH, Kundl) he continued his university career at the Institue of Biotechnology of Graz University of Technology. In 1994 he became associate professor and in 1995 he spent a sabbatical at the Center for Molecular Genetics, ACSD, La Jolla, USA as a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow. In 2001 he declined a call for full professor of biotechnology at TU Vienna and became full professor of molecular biotechnology at Graz University of Technology in 2003. In addition he was key researcher of the Research Centre Applied Biocatalysis (A-B) from 2003-2009.
Helmut Schwab's research interests are focused on molecular biotechnology and include herterologous gene expression (protein and metabolite production) in industrial microorganisms (bacteria, fungi), genetic stability, molecular enzymology, enzyme engineering and microbial cell engineering for cell factory construction.
Within ACIB he is responsible for the research field Protein Design and Engineering.
