Michael Sauer studied Biotechnology at the Swiss Federal Insitute of Technology in Zurich. He obtained his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Vienna. Postdoctoral research at the University of Milano-Bicocca was focused on vitamin C production with baker’s yeast. After 1,5 years of training as a patent assessor in Germany he returned to Vienna. Two years as senior postdoc were dedicated to metabolic engineering for the production of lactic acid with yeasts. For five years he was head of research at the School of Bioengineering at FH Campus Wien, University of Applied Sciences. Since 2010 he holds a position as senior scientist at the Department of Biotechnology of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. His main scientific focus is on industrial microbiology for chemical production from renewable resources. Bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi are employed for the production of base chemicals for polymer production, particularly organic acids. A strong focus is given on systems biology approaches for metabolic engineering.
