Karl Gruber studied chemistry at the University of Graz where he received his PhD (sub auspiciis praesidentis) in 1995. After a post-doctoral stay at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, USA, he returned to Graz as an APART-fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 1998. From 2002 to 2006, he was a senior researcher in the Research Centre Applied Biocatalysis (A-B). In 2006, he became associate professor at the University of Graz and in 2008 was appointed professor of “computational biosciences”.

Karl Gruber's research interests are focused on structural biology and molecular modeling and include structure-function relationships of enzymes, catalytic mechanism and enzyme engineering.
