Rolf Breinbauer (born 1970 in Schärding/Austria) studied chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Heidelberg. In 1998 he received his PhD under the guidance of Prof. M. T. Reetz at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Mülheim/Ruhr (Germany), followed by post-doctoral work with  Prof. E. N. Jacobsen at Harvard University (Cambridge/USA).

In 2000 he started his independent research career as a group leader at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Physiology and as a Junior Professor at the University of Dortmund/Germany. From 2005-2007 he was a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Leipzig.

Since 2007 he is Full Professor and Head of the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Graz University of Technology. His research interests encompass Combinatorial Chemistry, Structure-based Ligand Design, Homogeneous Catalysis, Synthesis of Bioconjugates, Organic Electrochemistry and Biocatalysis.

Within ACIB he serves as key researcher and deputy head of the research field Biocatalytic Synthesis.
