Bernhard Seiboth studied Microbiology at the University of Vienna and graduated as Dr. rer. nat. in 1996 on "Molecular regulation of cellulase gene expression in Trichoderma reesei". In1996 he was awarded with a one year post-doctoral fellowship (Erwin Schrödinger grant, Austrian Science Foundation) for the project "Cloning of genes involved in ER-Golgi vesicle transport in Aspergillus niger" carried out at the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute (NL) in the group of Cees A.M.J.J. van den Hondel and Peter Punt. Further Postdoc experience was gained within two EC funded projects which concentrated on filamentous fungi as cell factories for proteins and different metabolites. In 2003 he applied successfully for an assistant professor for Molecular Biology of Industrially Applied Fungi at the TU Vienna and holds since 2009 a permanent position and his habiltation is scheduled for autumn 2011. He is editorial board member of Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Current projects concentrate on different strain improvement strategies for filamentous fungi i.e. Trichoderma reesei as cell factory for cellulase and other related plant cell wall degrading enzymes. Other topics are recombinant protein production and metabolite production from renewable carbon sources. Research topics include the regulation and biochemistry of carbohydrate active enzymes production and carbohydrate metabolism with respect to lactose, D-galactose, D-xylose and L-arabinose catabolism.

Bernhard Seiboth is Key Researcher in the research field Cell Design and Cell Engineering.
